Seriously, I dunno what's up.  In the past 15 years the only time I made fanart was Donkey Country and Star Wars stuff in 4th grade.  For some reason, ever since I've come to China (more specifically the past 4 or 5 months) I can't stop doing fanart.  It's so strange.  Especially because I usually consider fanart to be kind of... eh. boring.  Make up your own stuff.

What's happening to me? Maybe I'm simply drawing my comforts and what makes me happy as some sort of base to hold onto.  China is a very different place with nothing that resembles home... ever.  It's always different.  So maybe it's my subconscious trying keep me from going crazy?  Who knows.  This has never happened before.

Anyway I'm starting to get bored of it so maybe I'll move on soon.  It's bothering me that 80% of the stuff in my gallery is based on something I didn't create.  It's so unusual to me.

There's nothing wrong with fan art. I would go so far as to say it's not inherently uncreative in the least (though its execution often is). You're adding your own touch to a preexisting universe-- isn't that what art is in the first place? It's not uncreative to represent the trees and mountains that you didn't create, is it? After all, original material is simply rearranged patterns, concepts, what-have-you.

Ignore me if you want, I probably get way too philosophical about this. XD;

I guess. I mean I have that attitude toward remakes and stuff. Like everyone gets really upset when a comic book movie goes to screen and it changes the looks of the characters or an actor protrays the character in a different manner or something like that. No one gets mad at the 40 millionth Robin Hood telling or the 7 trillionth Romeo and Juliet.

I just don't think it's the only thing you should do and I think that doing it too much can lead to... I dunno what to call it, creative stagnancy? Like how would you feel about a director that only made remakes of old movies? Isn't that a little bizarre?

Like personally am quite tired of the style I normally do so I'm looking to change it up a little bit by trying new methods and new stylistic approaches to things. I grow tired of what my characters look like and the usual angles I portray them. I want to try something new so I don't get stale.

Oh, I totally get what you're saying. Just go with whatever inspires you and don't feel like you "should" be creating a certain type of art.
